Logistics – the industry of the future

Efficient! Safe! Punctual! Continental technology keeps material transportation flowing.

Connectivity, startups, robot power: These concentrated industry trends will once again entice top industry stakeholders to the Hanover fairground in April. And Continental will be right in on the action. This year’s slogan – for the first time – will be: Industry 4.0 meets Logistics 4.0. Fittingly, we will be focusing on the challenges facing growing logistics chains at our Booth E18 in Hall 5. We supply key technologies for safe, efficient and smooth goods turnover – with a particular highlight being mounting elements for self-driving transport platforms that, for example, replenish production robots and machines at the right time and move independently around the area. Installed at the transition from the chassis to the switchgear unit, the special elements made of elastomer isolate the sensitive electronics from any vibrations and thus protect them against damage and unplanned failures. We will also be exhibiting an E-cargo bike equipped with our 48V eBike system, which the Spanish postal service uses to make deliveries in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner, in addition to the tire pressure monitoring systems ContiPressureCheck and ContiConnect for pneumatic tires. These systems measure air pressure and tire temperature using sensors inside the tire, thus enhancing safety during forklift truck use. The new Plus solid tire series for industrial applications will also be celebrating its premiere.

Do you want to see all this first-hand?
No problem! Come and see us from April 23 to 27, 2018, at the Hanover fairground: Hall 5, Booth E18. We look forward to seeing you!

Hans-Jürgen Duensing has been the head of ContiTech AG since May 2015. In his capacity as a member of the Continental Executive Board, his responsibilities include the Off-Highway division. One of the areas it focuses on is material transportation.

What potential do you see in the logistics industry?

Interview

Duensing: People’s consumer behavior is changing rapidly. At the same time, the willingness to pay more money for new, quicker delivery channels is falling. Transporting goods efficiently will thus be absolutely essential for mobility in the future.

What job does this create for you?

Duensing: Our job involves further optimizing the process chain as it becomes more complex, and improving the operating and process costs in stockholding. Automation and digitalization are major drivers in the intralogistics industry. Continental products are an indispensable part of the smooth material and goods flow.

What will the warehouse of the future look like?

Duensing: It will be fully automated, interconnected and flexibly adapted to the requirements of our customers. In individual cases, automated industrial trucks, intelligent forklift trucks, and robots and cobots that communicate with each other are already part of the value chain today. In the future, however, they will be the core elements of intralogistical fleets.

Did you know?Did you know?

  • Forecasts indicate that by 2050 global freight volume will be more than four times as high as at the start of this decade
  • By then 31,000 trillion tonne-kilometers of goods a year are expected to be transported worldwide
  • In 2017, 3.3 billion shipments were made in Germany alone

Off-Highway – One Source. More Efficiency

Continental offers a wide-ranging portfolio of components and systems for off-highway applications. Its solutions make construction, agricultural and transport machines and vehicles safer, more efficient, cleaner and more comfortable. Customers are supplied with technologies for information management, rubber and plastic components, tires and exhaust-gas aftertreatment modules – all tailor-made and from a single source.

Key Technologies for the Logistics Chain

How will automation and digitalization shape the logistics of the future? What innovations and technologies are already helping forklift drivers – and will continue doing so in the future – to transport goods safely, efficiently and connectedly? Hans-Jürgen Duensing, from Continental’s Executive Board, and Anna Rieker, Business Development, provided answers to these questions at the Continental Media Roundtable at Hanover Fair.
