Advantages of rubber compensators
- Reduction of tension in piping
Tension constantly occurs in piping systems because of rotating machines, thermal differences, pressure fluctuations and other influences. This often leads to increased wear, leaks or even fatigue failures. Compensators are well suited to absorbing tension. A characteristic of rubber compensators - and one that sets them apart from metal compensators - is that they experience only a relatively weak buildup of hydraulic reaction forces. For rubber compensators there is usually even a state in which they remain completely free of force despite internal pressure. - Isolation of noise and vibration
In the last few years in particular, noise control requirements have become considerably more stringent. Rubber compensators play an ever bigger role in deadening the noise occurring in piping systems. Thanks to the elastic construction of the flexible member, it is possible to reduce not only the piping's structure-borne noise but also the low-frequency noise generated by fluids. Depending on the surrounding conditions, sound attenuation of 5... 30 dB is attained by incorporation of a rubber compensator. This corresponds to a noise reduction of up to 95 %.
- Absorption of thermal expansion
Because of the high modulus of elasticity of the metalworking materials used, even moderate thermal expansion can unleash strong forces in piping. Compensators compensate the common methods (e.g. expansion arcs) by providing a space-saving and cost-effective method for absorbing motion of this kind. It is even possible to superimpose several axes (axial, lateral, angular). - Equalization of assembly mismatching
The requirements with respect to installation tolerances need not be defined so tightly if the piping plans call for the use of compensators from the very start. They cut costs and help avoid problems that could occur during installation. - Installation and removal assistance for couplings and piping segments
The installation and removal of couplings or piping segments for maintenance or repair purposes is difficult if there are not sufficient possibilities for moving the connecting pieces. It is advisable to use an additional compensator for components that must be exchanged or removed at regular intervals. This simplifies installation and reduces the danger of damage.
- Absorption of structural settling
Rigid piping undergoes stressing when buildings or buried tanks settle; in the worst of all scenarios, this could result in leaks or piping ruptures. An inter-
mediate compensator absorbs the motion, relieves the pipe system and makes it easier to remove or modify the piping.
