High-Tech Hoses from ContiTech Make Supply Chain for Basic Needs Safe and Flexible

Hanover, April 2010Used around the world to ensure water, nutrition and energy supplies for people • High expertise in materials and production • Tailor-made hose solutions using state-of-the-art technology • Integral service concept

At present, there are nearly seven billion persons on our planet, and in 20 years, there will be 8.3 billion. In a world facing population growth and climate change, it must be ensured that people have supplies of safe and environmentally compatible water, nutrition and energy. ContiTech, one of the leading German manufacturers of elastomer hoses, has taken on this global task. Its high-performance futuresafe hoses and hose lines are to be found wherever flexible supply connections are needed: in the food and beverage industry, in systems that provide people with clean drinking water, in irrigation systems and agricultural machines, and in the transportation of raw materials. “Each of these application fields poses specific requirements for the hose material and design,” stresses Günter Frölich, head of ContiTech’s Fluid Technology business unit. This calls for a hose manufacturer who has the full range of know-how with respect to materials and processes and is fit when it comes to national and international standards.

Ultra-hygienic connections
With a selection of more than twenty types of rubber, ContiTech develops elastomer compounds tailored specifically to meet the parametric demands of the various applications. For food and beverage hoses such as the LACTOPAL®, PURPLE SNAKE® or Blaudieck® versions, ContiTech only uses rubber that conforms to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment’s (BfR) recommendation XXI as well as the stringent directives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. Thanks to the white, non-porous and smooth inner linings, the media being transported experiences no change whatsoever in taste or odor. Together with the Blaudieck® and PAGUFIX 3000 fitting systems, the hoses form serviceable, antibacterial and reliable hose lines. Specific rubber compounds, a sophisticated process technology, high-quality reinforcement materials and professional attachment of couplings ensure not only the hygienic flow of media but also a long hose life and maximum industrial safety – even under severe stress loads.

Highest requirements for drinking water hoses
It is possible to survive for three weeks without food but only three days without water. Water is the most important basic foodstuff, assuming that it is not contaminated – free from germs, esculent and pure. To ensure this, hoses that convey water must be approved and labeled in accordance with EU drinking water regulations. AQUAPAL® from ContiTech was one of the first hoses to fulfill all statutory requirements for the safe transport of drinking water in all applications – as emergency supply lines in communities as well as lines set up as part of disaster relief efforts worldwide. The certified drinking water hose is one of the pieces of equipment contained in the water supply box of Germany’s Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance to ensure that the population and relief workers have sufficient potable water in the event of emergencies.

Safe transport of raw materials with high-tech hoses
Regardless of whether it’s a matter of gassing up at the pump, delivering heating oil to homes, loading tankers or servicing airplanes – throughout the world, ContiTech’s refueling hoses see to it that highly-combustible and highly-explosive fuel flows safely. Leaders on the market, these high-tech hoses are the result of development cooperation with the sales partner ELAFLEX, a company specialized in the development, testing and sales of innovative fueling systems, and ContiTech with its high materials and production expertise. This is evident, last but not least, in the filling station hose with its patented process involving a hose-in-hose system that makes it possible to recover vapor at service stations. “In this way we make an active contribution to protecting health and the environment,” emphasizes unit manager Frölich.

Qualified consultation for customers
The development and product expertise of ContiTech is complemented with an integral support concept which includes the qualified consultation with the customer as well as intensive training. “This is very important since sensitive fields, such as the highly know-how oriented foodstuffs and beverage industry, require a thorough knowledge of innovative hose-technology applications and materials, the statutory requirements and the latest cleaning agents and disinfectants,” stresses Günter Frölich. Because protection of the end user as well as the environment can be achieved only if there is precise interaction between technology and people.
